Amanda

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman

Amanda is the searching half of the embedded tale of Amandus and Amanda, whose long separation ends in a reunion so overwhelming that both die in each other’s arms. Her barefoot journey gives the romance its image of fidelity in motion, while its fatal ending makes reunion inseparable from loss.

Separation and Search

Amanda and Amandus lose track of one another and travel in opposite directions, she west and he east. While Amandus is held captive, Amanda wanders barefoot over rocks and mountains, her hair dishevelled, asking after him in towns and cities. At each gate she sits forlorn and asks whether her Amandus has arrived. The repeated search makes distance tangible: every road and settlement offers the possibility of news, but none brings her closer to certainty.

Reunion and Death

After circling the world by different routes, Amanda and Amandus are brought by chance to the gate of their native Lyons on the same night. Each calls aloud to learn whether the other is still alive; recognizing the familiar voice, they rush into one another’s arms and both drop dead from joy. The reunion resolves their separation but grants no life beyond it, turning the expected romantic fulfilment into a sudden, shared death.

Place in the Narrative

The tale appears as an example of the kind of love story that can deeply affect a tender mind. Amanda’s ordeal and the lovers’ final embrace are offered not as historical argument but as emotional nourishment, set against the antiquarian material travellers might assemble. Her story thus matters both as a miniature romance and as an illustration of how narrative feeling can outweigh learned collections of facts.
